Prevent 1 Death In The World Of Warcraft

Oh, this is a tough one. There are so many characters I just really like and wanted to see more of, though their deaths did not make much of a difference in the grand scheme of things. And then there are characters I don’t personally care about, but whose deaths changed things for the worse.

I’m trying to think of a significant death that, if prevented, could have stopped many more from happening, and I keep coming back to Sylvanas.

If Arthas had not managed to kill Sylvanas, she would most certainly have seen him dead and ended the Scourge’s march on Quel’Thalas. The Lich King would have lost his most powerful champion and without Arthas, perhaps Illidan would have succeeded in destroying the Frozen Throne - though Illidan of course would not have had blood elf forces to aid him, as without the fall of Quel’Thalas, there would be no blood elves.

In saving Sylvanas, we would severely weaken and ultimately destroy the Scourge before it got bad enough for WotLK to happen. We would deprive Illidan of blood elf support, drastically changing the events of TBC. Without a leader like Sylvanas to rally them, the Forsaken as we know them would not come to be, though provided Quel’Thalas did not completely wipe the undead out in Lordaeron, some kind of community of free-willed undead might still organize itself. Lacking military might and Val’kyr, though, the Forsaken would not attack Gilneas. Without the blood elves in Dalaran, Garrosh would not have been able to steal the Divine Bell, at least not the same way; the Purge of Dalaran would not have taken place. Hell, without the blood elves the Horde wouldn’t have had the mana bomb that flattened Theramore.

So yeah, there’s a lot of conjecture there, I know, but I think if Sylvanas had not died, Azeroth would have fared a lot better overall.
